Heartworm Testing Services for Pets

They may have the word “heart” in their name, but there is nothing to love about these pesky creatures. Heartworm can cause permanent organ damage, heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure, lung disease and even death if left untreated. Fortunately, with the help of our team, your pet can be protected from heartworm, and treated properly if they are ever infected. Contact us at 905.685.7349 to learn more.

How are pets tested for heartworm?

The test is done by taking a small blood sample from your pet. The blood is drawn and results can be analyzed in a matter of minutes because we have an in-house lab. We look for specific heartworm proteins that indicate the presence of as little as one heartworm in your pet’ system.

How often should my pet receive heartworm testing?

We suggest your loyal companion be tested for heartworm at least once per year. This is typically done during their annual or semi-annual wellness checkup. Remember, your pet can get heartworm all year round even if they live exclusively indoors.

How can I protect my pet from heartworm?

Ensure they take preventative medication. There are oral and topical versions available with different dosing schedules. Our team can help you choose which one is right for your pet. In addition, it can help to keep your home and surroundings as free from mosquitoes as possible. (Pets get heartworms from just one bite of an infected mosquito.) Get rid of stagnant water and make sure their toys and other surfaces they touch are always clean.
